AOL Acquires Yedda
AOL has just announced the acquisition of Israel-based Yedda, Inc. Yedda is a semantic search cum social networking site similar to Hakia. Yedda’s service essentially matches anyone looking for something with experts in that field. From giving it a trial for about three hours, about the same lenght of time that I used Hakia, I think the Hakia experience is better.
Why did AOL acquire Yedda, instead something better or just developing it’s own? Well, it’s difficult to tell, especially not knowing how AOL plans to integrate Yedda into it’s service. But Yedda is still a beta service, so I don’t think this acquisition cost AOL a whole lot. AOL could also be trying (with this acquisition) to get into the modern, social networking arena and offer something that is more relevant to today’s Internet user than it’s traditional service.
The AOL service, within the context of modern Internet usage, has become (by my asessment) very stale, so I think this move is a good one. How they integrate Yedda, and what other moves they make to render their service more appealing to the modern Internet crowd is something I’ll be watching.
